Paying For College Through An Online School
One of the advantages of attending an online school to get a college degree is that some of the incidental costs associated with traditional schools are reduced. These include transportation and food. Even so, many distance learners still need assistance in paying for their education.
Online schools are aware that many of their students have other financial obligations such as household bills, child-related expenses or medical bills. This is why they offer payment plans that allow you to pay in monthly, quarterly or semi-annual installments. Some institutions give a discount of up to 50 percent if you pay the tuition in full upon enrollment.
Others offer a payment plan that allows you to pay for one course at a time, rather than an entire semester or year at once. Here, you are required to pay the tuition and applicable fees before each course’s start date. To further reduce costs, you could try to get credit for college-level courses you may have taken in another institution, while attending an online high school, or for relevant work experience.
Employers, including the military and government agencies, can also be a source of financial aid. Some companies have benefits that allow subsidizing tuition for employees. Online schools require employers to shoulder at least 50 percent of the cost; otherwise, this option is not applicable.
Both the employer and employee/student must also follow other terms and conditions such as submitting required documents and payment on time. Payment includes any amount not shouldered by the employer, which should be paid out of pocket by the employee. Another condition is that this arrangement is valid only while the student is on the payroll of the employer.
Some employers prefer reimbursing their employees the cost of tuition instead of being directly billed by the school. Students are usually given 60 days to collect and submit payment from their employer. An additional fee applies if the student makes a late payment.
Other traditional sources of financial aid include scholarships and loans. You can use private loans or Federal Financial Aid grant and loan programs. If you are a member of active duty, reserve or National Guard military personnel or your spouse is one, you are eligible for discount in tuition at most online schools.
